Be flexible with your dates and destination

If you're set on going to New York for New Year's Eve, of course you're going to pay more! Not only for flights, but accommodation and activities too! However, if you're at the liberty to travel at any time of the year, keep an eye out for cheap flights on Sky-Scanner and plan your holiday around the flights instead. After all, flights tend to be the most expensive part of an overseas holiday.
2. Look at hotel alternatives

Hotels can easily cost just as much as your flights.. just think $200 per night x 10 nights... 😱 That's a huge chunk of your budget! Instead, look for hostels, home stays or even couch surfing.. It's easy to save big dollars by simply changing your accommodation and who knows, you might make a few new friends.
3. Search for free activities

Nearly every city I've visited as had a tonne of free activities. From markets, to look outs. Museums and walking tours. If you do enough researching, every city has free hidden gems!
Titanium tip; walking tours are not only great for fitness, but they're also a brilliant way to learn things from a local. History, rumors, local eats.
4. Use public transport

Whilst those hop-on hop-off buses are very inviting and hassle free, don't be fooled, they'll set you back a pretty penny for the convenience. Instead, if you can master the local public transport you can pay as little as 1/5 of the price of those fancy buses. Also, the satisfaction of working out foreign transport is pretty sweet. BUT...If public transport isn't your style, no judgement, opt for private shared shuttles or ubers instead.
5. By meals from supermarkets

If you were to eat out every meal, don't be surprised if you spend $60+, a day, on food alone! Cha-ching $$$ ( That's not including those pesky cover charges or tips!) By buying meals at a local supermarket and cooking at a hostel, not only do you save money, but you also make friends! Nothing brings broke travellers together faster than a cheap kitchen meal. (Especially if they're going halves too!)
